The most IMPORTANT rule in 3D

composition tutorial

Hard surface modeling is one thing, but visual design is a completely different beast.

We as human beings tend to strive towards evenness and monotony; it is something that is engrained in our DNA since birth.

It is very natural for us to start hard surface modeling and to create very basic, even designs, because that is simply the way our brains are naturally programmed.

But it is essential to break free from this programming.

One of the biggest problems we see with new 3D artists and modelers is that they fail to use one of the most important principles in 3D: The 70/30 Principle.

There are many different definitions and explanations for this principle, but I'll explain it simply: Offset your detail to the upper 70%, or the lower 30% of the model.

This means if you plan on adding detail to a cylinder, don't put it straight in the center - offset it a little bit towards the bottom or top!

It might not seem like much, but your shapes and designs will be so much more powerful!

So in this episode, you'll learn:

  • What the 70/30 principle is in 3D, and why it's so important
  • How to unplug your brain from making things so even and monotone
  • Why this one change will fix your designs forever

We hope you enjoy this one!
